Its Never Too Late

The idea of change can be very scary, but one thing I’ve learned is that change is inevitable, and life sometimes forces you into it. Such is the case with me now being an empty nester. Coupled with unhappiness in my job, and the arrival of a new year—which naturally prompts self-reflection and a fresh start—I am starting to take an inventory of my life. Being a single mother—and I’m pretty sure a lot of single mothers can relate—I often took jobs out of necessity and for the ability to provide for me and my daughter, not out of preference. Now that I have sent my daughter off to college, I can pursue a career that has always been in the back of my mind: technology. Without any hesitation, and with the mindset that it’s never too late to learn new things, I am pursuing a career change and many other things. If you are in the same boat as me or can relate, I have included some things below that I will practice as I journey into this new territory.

1. Change is Inevitable

Just as the seasons change, I myself must be open to change. “Change is good” is a mantra you can say to yourself. Change can sometimes be scary for people; however, whether you embrace it or not, change is constantly happening. Once you receive that and accept it as normal, you will always be open to change.

2. Do a Self-Inventory

It is very important to assess your current situation and adjust accordingly. Do a self-inventory from time to time to take into account your surroundings and the things that are happening and changing around you. Whether it is changes at work or a change that suddenly happens in your personal life, it is important to be aware of that  and figure out how to adjust. Sometimes life forces you into change. Assess the situation and determine which elements are within your control. It might be helpful to categorize elements as “in my control” and “out of my control” in a two-column chart. Furthermore, sit with the list of items under “in my control” and notice what comes up. Check in with your sense of empowerment, contribution, significance, and belonging. Then, as you sit with the items under “out of my control,” you might ask: “Is there anything I can make peace with? Let go of? Ask for help with?”

3. Make Time for Self-Care

While you are embracing new things in your life and adjusting to change, it is very important to have a healthy routine. For me, it is working out—my time in the gym after work—and my faith. My faith centers me, and a hard workout helps me to feel like I can accomplish anything.

4. Be Patient with Yourself

With each change comes discomfort. While on your journey, it is very important to celebrate yourself and the goals that you have accomplished. Also, never compare your journey to anyone else.

5. Consistency

Consistency is key to achieving any goal. Whether it’s showing up for your new career path, maintaining your self-care routine, or continuing to learn and grow, regular effort will yield the best results. Small, consistent steps build momentum and make big changes feel manageable.

Embracing change, conducting a self-inventory, prioritizing self-care, practicing patience, and maintaining consistency are all vital steps as you navigate new chapters in life. Remember, it’s never too late to learn, grow, and pursue the dreams that have been quietly waiting. I’m right there with you on this journey, and I believe in our ability to thrive!
